Automotive AM/MW Reception 1 Year, 6 Months ago Karma: 0
I'm a delivery driver who spends at least 6 hours a day in my vehicle. I spend much of my time in fringe areas where signals on AM and FM cut in and out. Can any of you recommend a signal or antenna booster/amplifier? Even if it provides just a little boost on either AM or FM. I have already upgraded the antenna which has helped.

I have a similar question as I have a long trip planned for March; is there any car radio you guys recommend for AM reception? I have a Grand Cherokee whose stock radio is mediocre at best and would like to replace it with something considerably better.

TIA.

You guys have given me an idea.

I have an old GE portable CB radio that came with a magnetic extendable stick antenna. Its antenna has an RCA connector.

I think I'll put the antenna together with my Radio Shack TRF which I many years ago modified to accommodate an RCA connector.

I'll do a side by side test against my 2009 Highlander stock radio/antenna. I might add that have no complaints with AM reception in the Highlander, which is more than I can say for the vehicle.

It has always seemed to me that the start of any reception with a radio is the antenna. A windshield antenna is not as good as a external antenna. The radio can be stock or aftermarket, but with the aftermarket radio the AM signal strength and image rejection is the last thing on their list of features. The stock radio can be easier to tune and control than most aftermarket radios.
I am in my 50's, so I grew up with a radio before things like tape players or Cd were added. You could adjust the antenna trim on old radios, the new ones are all electronic controls. I would say that to get the most out of a radio in a car, you need a antenna mounted on the fender, with a signal booster that plugs into the antenna and goes to the radio. I don't know if they still make them like that any more, but you need to be able to cut it off and on. That will prevent overmodulating a signal that may change as you drive. Most stock radios are better than anything made to replace it on the market. I hope this helps some.
